The new Administrative Offices for the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research brought together seven administrative departments previously spread across five floors in two buildings. To foster institutional goals of collaboration and interaction between the departments, architect and client studied options for how departments would maintain their structural integrity while engaging in collaboration, and to identify the trade-offs in light and circulation within the space. Ultimately, the design of the new offices balanced both autonomy and collaboration in a dynamic environment that reflects the innovative science being conducted by the Institute.
